Chad
1991
Chadian comics began in 1991 with Sahibi, the first youth magazine in the country to print comic pages, and with the Atelier Bulles du Chari, a drawing workshop in N'Djamena founded by the French architect and cartoonist Gérard Leclaire.
Its members made the collective album Palabres au Tchad and Adji Moussa's Les Sao, the first solo album, in 1998. Press cartooning then became the main outlet, helped by Le Miroir, the first satirical paper in Chad, founded in 2003. Unrest and rebel attacks pushed several authors, including Adjim Danngar, into exile from 2004.

Chapter 01
Sahibi and the Atelier Bulles du Chari
Sahibi, a youth magazine in French, published its first issue in April 1991 after a French aid worker met the head of national literacy. Soon after, Gérard Leclaire founded the Atelier Bulles du Chari, whose young artists drew comic pages for Sahibi from its sixth issue. Sahibi stopped after its fifteenth issue when French funding ended, and the workshop launched the one-off magazine Chari BD in 1996.

First albums and a satirical press
The 1998 collective album Palabres au Tchad gathered pages by nine Chadian authors, and Adji Moussa released Les Sao, the first solo comic album by a Chadian author. In 2003 Adji Moussa founded Le Miroir, the first satirical paper in the country, where he drew the strip Ana-Koulou-Foga until 2008. In 2005 the Graphiculture foundation published the collective album La Grande Épopée du Tchad on the colonial conquest.

Chapter 03
Exile, press cartoons and a few new albums
In 2008 rebels entered the capital and several artists left, including Samy Daïna for France and, for a time, Adji Moussa for Senegal. Comics almost vanished from local publishing and press cartoons became the main form, with Djam's drawing the front-page cartoon of N'Djaména Hebdo. Adjim Danngar, who lives in France, published his first solo album, Mamie Denis, with L'Harmattan BD in 2017.
