漫画manhua

In short

In China, comics are called manhua, a word Feng Zikai revived in its modern sense in 1925, while lianhuanhua names the palm-sized picture-story books that declined from the late 1980s.

Shanghai was the early centre, with the weekly Shanghai Manhua (1928 to 1930) and Zhang Leping's Sanmao (1935).

Feng Zikai revived the word manhua in its modern sense with Zikai Manhua (1925), and the weekly Shanghai Manhua ran from 21 April 1928 to 7 June 1930 at about 3,000 copies an issue. Zhang Leping created Sanmao in 1935.

Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House, reorganised in the early 1950s, was the key producer of lianhuanhua, which declined from the late 1980s. The publisher has reissued titles, and the Shanghai Museum of Art has opened a permanent lianhuanhua exhibition.
