In short

Egypt's comics heritage centres on Samir, the Dar Al-Hilal children's weekly launched on 15 April 1956, which brought Tintin, Tarzan, Popeye and Disney to Arabic readers alongside local strips and reached about 80,000 copies across the region.

Magdy El Shafee's Metro was banned in 2008, and the independent magazine Tok Tok ran from 2011 to 2020.
