In short

Moroccan comics history is short and often political.

The first known comic is Sakr Assahra, circulated in Tetouan in 1950, followed in the early 1960s by satirical papers such as Tekchab and Satirix. Abdelaziz Mouride, called the father of Moroccan comics, drew his story of imprisonment under Hassan II, published in full as On affame bien les rats in 2000. A comics department opened at the fine arts institute in Tetouan in 2000, and newer authors such as Rebel Spirit and Zainab Fasiki publish in Darija and French.

    Early comics and satirical papers

The first known Moroccan comic is Sakr Assahra, an Arabic comic of about twenty pages circulated in Tetouan in 1950 by an unknown author. In the early 1960s Hamid Bouhali and Mohamed Filali created the satirical papers Tekchab and Satirix, the second subtitled a journal of political comics.

    Chapter 02

    School comics and prison comics

From 1982 to 1990 the Ministry of Education published the comic booklets A grand pas for pupils learning French. Abdelaziz Mouride, jailed from 1974 to 1984, smuggled out comic pages about political prisoners, which appeared in French in 1982 as Dans les entrailles de mon pays. The trilogy Histoire du Maroc en bandes dessinées followed in 1993, but the market for imported comics collapsed in the 1990s.

Mouride published On affame bien les rats in 2000 and Le Coiffeur in 2004, and the first comic in the Amazigh language, Tagellit nayt ufella, also appeared in 2004.
